Vladas Eidukevičius was famous as a portrait painter in interwar Kaunas, but he paid almost as much attention to landscapes. He was one of the few artists who enjoyed painting panoramic views. He looked at Kaunas from a point of view that he shared with photographers more than with painters.A View of Kaunas from Žaliakalnis Hillis one of his best pieces of work.
Eidukevičius painted Kaunas from Žaliakalnis Hill several times, but he enjoyed painting the town even more from the other side, from the slopes of Aleksotas where he lived. His famous portraitVincas Dulaitis with his Daughter(1938) also has a view of the Old Town. Likewise,A View of Kaunas from Žaliakalnis Hillresembles a portrait against the background of the town, even though the faces of the woman and the girl are portrayed only in the most general way. The prevailing critical opinion is that Eidukevičius was not a painter of cityscapes, because there is too much nature, consisting of sky and vegetation, in them. This opinion can be disputed. The artist's work also includes canvases that express his interest in a totally urbanised environment. He even produced paintings of Kaunas' factories. It is probable that his nostalgia for industrial areas was prompted by memories of growing up in Riga.
