New Display of Lithuanian Art
New Display of Lithuanian Art of the First Half of
the 20th Century
The renewed part of the National Art Gallery's permanent
exhibition invites to explore the history of Lithuanian art from
the beginning of the 20th century to the Second World War. It is
divided into four thematic sections: 'Reality, Expectations and
Visions', 'Art and State', 'Who Are We' and 'Tensions'. The
exhibition begins with a presentation of the legacy of artists who
worked in Vilnius in the early 20th century. Starting from this
transformative historical period, visitors are invited to explore
the field of Lithuanian art in the interwar period: which artists
and art were fostered by independent Lithuania. Alongside examples
of the official, state-sponsored art style examples, the exhibition
presents bold artistic experiments and highlights the tensions of
the time that concerned artists.
In addition to paintings, sculptures and graphic works, the
exhibition also includes photography, animation and applied and
book graphics. A separate part of the permanent exhibition is the
biannual temporary exhibition, which allows to discover new themes,
authors and works. The first one invites you to get acquainted with
the artists' view of forms of leisure and entertainment in
inter-war Lithuania.
The narrative is shaped by the works of artists from different
generations, from the classics to lesser-known authors. The
exhibition features artists such as Gerardas Bagdonavičius and Jan
Bułhak, Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, Barbora Didžiokienė,
