About Neighbours and Passers-By
Documentations of Performances from the 1970s and
1980s
The exhibition 'About Neighbours and Passers-By', spread around the lobby of the National Gallery of Art, shows films, photographs and artist's books documenting 12 different performances created between 1970 and 1990, when the performance genre was still relatively unknown.
The artists are from various cities in Europe and the United States, most of whom did not know each other or had not even heard of each other. The images remind us of objects that we see in everyday life, in towns, in the natural world, and at home. However, they are accompanied by new stories and ideas, which, when all combined together, take on additional meanings. A few decades ago, these performances were completed without any intended audience. Quite often, they simply fused into people's everyday lives. For others, this fusion was not possible, because of obstructions by video cameras and photographers. For some, the people documenting the performance were the only audience. These documentations show us little of what went on around the performances. How they were accepted at the time, and how they would be accepted today, is left to the viewer's imagination, along with the possibility of extending this exhibition beyond the gallery's walls, and applying distinct meanings to the everyday actions of our neighbours and passers-by.
