Vytautas Šerys
Vytautas Šerys. A Retrospective
The work of Vytautas Šerys (1931-2006), despite spanning almost
five decades and belonging to two historical periods, the Soviet
era and the subsequent period of independence, nevertheless
projects an image of integrity. Its integral nature stems from the
artist's determined and focused passage to his late creative
period, and from his understanding that different forms of artistic
expression, whether they be sculpture, painting, monotype or
drawing, are equally important. Šerys' integrity rests on the
consistency of his experimentation in form, and on his vision of
the surrounding world as a certain design, as well as his key
artistic principles and his distinctive features, such as
controlled chance, incompleteness and a multiplicity of meaning. In
addition, his work, especially the work from his later period, is a
reflection of the utopia of European Modernist culture: l'art
pour l'art.
