Guided tours in English at the National Gallery of Art
Flying and Falling. Lithuanian Art under Soviet Rule and
Beyond
- 20 March, Thursday, 18:00
- 22 March, Saturday, 14:00
- 27 March, Thursday, 18:00
Join us for guided tours throughout the Lithuanian art
collection display at the NGA, exploring Lithuanian art from the
1950s to today. Discover how artists navigated Soviet censorship,
shaped narratives of resistance, and redefined their practice after
independence.
During the tour, we will examine official socialist realist works,
underground modernist expressions, and contemporary pieces that
challenge historical norms. The tour highlights how artistic
choices were often shaped by personal circumstances, political
pressure, and the need to balance creative freedom with external
constraints. Personal stories of artists-those who conformed, those
who rebelled, and those who created in exile-reveal the deep
connection between art and politics.

The guided tours will be led by NGA's trainee Julia Knapmeyer. Julia studies Cultural Studies and Political Science and has been temporarily located in Vilnius as part of the student exchange programme at Vilnius University.
Participation is possible by purchasing the museum ticket prior to the tour.
